It's absolutely not Japanese knotweed. The leaves are different, and they come off the stem differently. J. Knotweed has larger rounder stems and grows very tall. It does not have the same flowers. We have it all over here and I have eradicated the few pieces that came in with topsoil that I needed.
 
Looking at the leaves and stems in the first picture I would say it has to be Elderberry or some subspecies of elderberry. Do the berries grow in clumps of about 25-50 pea sized almost black/purple in the fall? When you smash the berries do they stain a dark purple color? We have them all over and they can become invasive. The plant grows to be about 3-5 foot tall out here and seems like it likes the more shady areas along treelines and field edges.
