The eye irritation might be a humidity problem. Do you have a tea kettle or pot on the stove to add water to the air? I know if I sleep on the couch and the water pot is not on the stove my nose and eyes get pretty irritated.

We have a kettle on each stove and cool mist humidifiers running in both stove rooms and I have no problems now.

Good luck with the new insert.

The proper cap will create a pressure difference inducing draft when wind passes over and through it.

Open liner tops will down draft severly as the wind passes over the open liner and falls, more so when it's cold.

"Priming" the liner with some newspaper and then starting a small fire will reverse a down draft as long as the unit can breathe air into the firebox.

More info on the house, exhaust fans etc, will help everyone help you more effectively.

A new stove will stink as the oils burn off and the paint cures.

Usually in the few first fires as they are cooler fires for break in.
