Right now I'm leaning towards the Blaze King Princess insert; Pacific Energy Summit insert; or the Woodstock Progress Hybrid.

Space concerns being a valid issue, I think an insert is the way to go. At this point, I'm checking out local dealers for both. Sadly, the reviews for both dealers are less than inspiring...

I think someone mentioned the blower coming with the insert. That may be the case with the ones your looking at

However when I was shopping I remember them being optional. On my Quadrafire 3100i insert it was definitely optional. It's not a flush mount and it heats very well without the blower (but I went with the blower and I do use the blower sometimes) That's been my experience with mine, but again it's not a flush mount and I get a fair amount of radiant heat coming off the small stove top portion that does extend out in front.

My father does the same. They rarely ever use their blower. With our floor plan, the blower would be nice at night to blow heat up towards our bedrooms.

Would a free standing stove some where else in the house work?

How's the house layout? Even a rough sketched floor plan would help, also.

Which ever way you go, stove or insert, start getting firewood NOW, you won't regret it.

The current fireplace is immediately to the left of the cider boys cap. Where the cap is, would be my garage. Garage feeds into kitchen, then dining area, wall between kitchen and living room, fireplace. On the west side of the plans the house is a split level. Downstairs there's a large unfinished room we use for storage (door always closed), large room we'll eventually carpet for the kids to play in, and a laundry room. Upstairs we have 4x bedrooms, two bathrooms. Master bedroom in southwest corner of plans.

There is a door on the downstairs side we installed so children wouldn't go falling down them. Usually open since the main air return is right there. Upstairs side is open and no doors. - sorry, haven't figured out how to rotate images for posting on tapatalk...

Do you have a ceiling fan upstairs?

And what's going to heat the lower level?

Three ceiling fans upstairs (master bedroom and children's rooms). Downstairs is mostly unused for now aside from storage, an elliptical, and the laundry room.

You won't want to put the stove in the basement. Not enough air movement to get the heat upstairs!

For those debating between a freestanding stove and an insert, there are "inserts" that stick out a good deal, I have the Lopi Republic insert (same as the Lopi Revere but more basic door) that sticks onto the hearth a little less than a foot, but you can still see the rest of the stove and I got an insulated flex liner that goes straight up the chimney. We def use the blower for max heat but get a good deal of convective heat even without it and can put a steamer on top or even cook on it without losing any floor space or needing to build out the hearth. Lopi and several other companies make inserts that stick out a bit like this.

I a power outage, I just have the wife stop fanning me with a palm leaf and fan the stove instead while I go get the generator going.
