I would start by just reading through the forum. Most general wood stove advice will apply. Then, people here are really good about answering specific questions.

2 things first... before you burn make sure you have dry wood. Your stove will be less picky about it than a more modern stove but it is still important. Second, you want to make sure your chimney is safe before you use your stove. That is even more important than the first, but the first can take time. To make sure your chimney is safe, the best way is to have a certified sweep inspect it and/or clean it for you.

Agree with Mongo, once you know the flue is gtg get a couple of CO detectors. I always have 1 in the room with the stove and 1 in our bedroom. Once that is taken care of, enjoy the warm and toasty world of wood fired warmth.

Welcome aboard!

Thanks and yes. On the plus side I know the owner used it last week. She left us wood and kindling inside and a half a cord in the wood shed. I need to figure out the dampers and such for this stove.

All cast iron even 2 doors howto add pics? Need any all advice. He's been used regularly, just not by me. Open to all guidance.
Looks like a M520 which is what we have.
The only cast iron on the stove is the doors, the rest is steel plate.
Should have a fire brick baffle and while not as efficient as the newer stoves they are impressive in their heating ability. We really like ours.

Hi fellow old Lopi owners!

I have a weird question – I was wondering if someone could measure the height of the flu collar that extends out of the top of the stove. It looks to be about 2-3 inches, but I can’t tell for sure from the pictures. I imagine that they’re the same on all of the Lopi’s from that era (M-520 or M-380 from ~1982_84). Ours was cut off at some point and I’m having a new one welded on there but I wasn’t sure of the exact height to make it.

thanks in advance if anyone has the time to measure that for me.

Here is a couple of photos of our M520. The actual measurement is 1 3/8"from the top of the stove, It extends through the top plate to the fire box shown in the other photo. Probably welded on the inside.
Hope this helps.

Thank you! That is exactly what I needed. I'm having a section of 8" Schedule 40 steel pipe cut and welded on there and although I doubt that the exact length is super critical, I wanted to get it right. I really appreciate your taking the time to do measure it!
