New chimney in new house

The only downside I see to masonry is also the strength: permanent solution. They are not fun if you want to remodel or change things.
 
That is the problem, in some cases they are not permanent. Chimney's weather and degrade. If not properly supported or if the ground is soft they can also sink. Earthquakes and brick do all sorts of fun things.

I completely agree in areas with lots of seismic activity masonry chimneys don't make sense
