"New" 028 Super (Photo Shoot)

Thanks to everyone who helped me pick out a used saw. I appreciate the help, especially since I know next to nothing about 'em.

I picked up the well-respected 028 last night ($165) and checked it out and cleaned it up a bit today...I have no interest in cleaning it up too much, I like the old school look and wear n' tear. Gives it character. But, I wanted to get rid of any excess oil/dirt build-up.

Here are some before cleaning it up:

My wife photoshopped one of 'em for me. Thought it looked pretty cool with the orange isolated.

I fired it up and it ran perfectly. It was impressive, much better than my Pop's little Poulan...which is about the only other saw I've run. I didn't have a chance to cut with the 028 yet, as I'm waiting for some safety gear to arrive first. But, I'm sure it'll be fun.

I have read that the 028 is a well respected saw and liked by many. Not the fastest or lightest around. But for that price, it's a great buy.

I just won an auction on an 028AV.. Pretty stoked about getting it...

Hope you get many useful years out of that beautiful machine

and they you look in the loft of the workshop and there are cardboard boxes FULL of parts, saws, bars, chains......yep, you're gonna be hooked.

The 028 AV is an oldie but goodie. I can't wait to get it. It is Super clean.

No, Dex can handle the pressure, he'll be able to quit when it gets out of hand, I've shown him that there can be light at the end of the tunnel. I actually sold one the other day, the plain jane MS250............. I'm down to just 16 now.

I would suggest you at least pull that sprocket off and see how much grime is under it around the clutch. Might surprise you what's under there. Easy to do and then you'll know for sure she ain't going to be slipping in the cut!

That model is more pro than not; white plastic handle, metal side cover, split crankcase and cylinder that can be modified/ported rather easy. The spur sprocket is a bit of a drawback, but you can get a rim drive clutch/brake drum for them.

I agree with this whole heartedly.

If the sprocket is worn and needs to be replaced, Oregon sells a "PowerMate" kit that is pretty affordable, especially compared to the OEM kit.

Also, if you are sorta new to saws, just be careful with the chain thats on there. Its the yellow chain, or the one that cuts fast but doesnt have the anti-kickback features on it. You can run them just fine, but its something to be aware of until you get used to your saw.

That sounds possible for a guy like me, but I'm hoping I can fight the urge! I have expensive hobbies and three kids on the way...so I'll be trying to keep as much money in my pocket as possible. Homey's broke. Hence the saw, no cheaper way to heat than cutting up your own wood!
