I would say red oak. I have split a lot of white oak in the last 2 years and the bark is a bit flatter with white. Besides, who cares, it is oak. No mistaken that smell. Isn't it wonderful.
I think it is something in the Red Oak group, maybe Scarlet or Pin Oak. Doesn't matter much, since all the Red Oak group have pretty much the same wood when you're using it for firewood.
Yes the center was rotted from like the first 3' up from the base , so close to that was punky like hogwildz mentioned earlier , but that was a small amount. Yes RO Ibelieve it is.
