These "less desirable " species are still useful as firewood in my opinion. Good for filling in the gaps between a few splits of the good stuff. Helps keep you from plowing through the good stuff too quickly. The less quality wood typically catches fire quickly so its good for starting a fire and when I am reloading I usually throw a few splits of the less desirable species in with a few splits of oak or ash on top. The cheap stuff burns fast and heats quick and when it's down to coals the good stuff kicks in. Seems to work for me.
