Southern Catalpa? From The Audubon Guide, "leaves have an unpleasant odor when crushed." We've got Northern Catalpa here. Apparently not much BTU. I would split it small and use it for kindling, but you have a lot more days where you just need a short chill-buster fire, so you might want to leave some bigger splits for that purpose.
Did the tree have the big "green beans" hanging from it? I've never cut a Catalpa but have seen them with the beans.
Rebelduckman, I think that is catalpa too. I really studied up on a nice tree trunk laying just down from where I was sawing up a black oak recently on some land clearing by a farmer. It was just laying there for the taking. I studied up on the bark and the leaves with my books and it keyed out a catalpa, so I left it laying. Your bark and leaves look just like it, sorry.......
