I believe that to be Hickory. Finer grain than oak for sure, very white sapwood. Bark looks like it could be Pignut or Bitternut Hickory. Look for the nuts on the ground.
 
I'm also in the hickory dept, ash is usually one color all that thru, basswood which has similar bark to ash has the dark pin in the middle, hickory's bark resembles ash to a point but is much more grovier and dark bottoms of the grove like the pics posted, plus the splits are light ringed to dark which is also a sign of hickory (very good burning wood)

Have a bunch of bass wood down from two years. I don't bother using it for the house but split it up for the maple syrup evaporator.

Ahhh I see you are a man of culture as well. All my junk wood ends up in the fire pit or evaporator here too! I'm just a hobbyist having fun with sugar and I only do 30 trees a year but even that takes a lot of wood.
