Are you an installer, shop owner or tech? Share your whacko moments. I'll go first.
Today I'm returning to a customer to install a new igniter. There is nothing wrong with the one he has, but the stove won't light. Simply, it's not getting enough air. I wanted to troubleshoot the stove last week but did not have enough time.
Last week I went to the stove for the first time. He had power washed the ash out of the stove and since then it wasn't working properly. No joke.
It's an Englander (Summers Heat) So I go through it and find the vacuum switches all wired wrong. Fix those and at least the stove runs until it times out. Igniter glows but nothing happens. He says it's the igniter and I say I'll order him one, but thats not it.
I come back with the igniter today and install it. Nothing. It still won't light. I start pulling the motors out and find that instead of lytherm or silicone gaskets, he has used plumbers putty.
I seal em up…still nothing. I asked him at least 20 times if he too kthe gasket off from behind the burnpot…no he says.
I remove the burn pot and low and behold....more putty.
So I cut a gasket and put it in. Whola! We have fire. $999.00 for the stove. He cleaned it for free then paid me $600.00 for labor and parts, all of which he didn't need.
