I use a simple method. A piece of string at the required length with 1 four inch nail on either end. I 'scribe' the log to the correct lengh within seconds. It fits in my pocket and I'm ready to mark the next log. Sometimes I'll give the log a quick cut on the scribed markings since the sawdust might obscure it.
