The spruce branches are so green that if I don't line up that sweet spot on the Fiskar, it won't pop and split at all.

Looks like oak ray fleck to me.

A lot of folks shy away from burning sycamore because it is so difficult to split. However If you get the job done and season accordingly, it burns great.
