Looking into pellet stoves.

House was built in the late 70's. Not sure what the R value is. I will have to go up in the attic and crawl space to see insulation. Will be replacing the Andersen double pain windows and Sliders this summer. Other wise house is good. My back of the house faces south east,so I have the same amount of sun in the winter as in summer. I will probably redo the insulation underneath the house while I'm running gas pipe and removing the old well system.
 
Just looked R-25. Forgot to add my kitchen is open to the family room down two steps as well as the living room to the foyer.
 
A bit on the low side for attic. Shoot for around 40 to 60 IMO
 
The Castile looks like it's in really good shape and should be perfect BTU output for your home. I would try to see how flexible the seller is with the price.
 
Yes! I agree on insulation Bioburner. I will address that asap. Will be doing much more improvement when the weather gets warmer. I will have a short stint between the end of heating season before the air conditioning calls start happening. I appreciate all the info you guys are throwing at me!

Before going would see what the new price is. Seller seems high but maybe holding out because of the cold weather. How much venting go with it as that helps too. Price when the weather gets warm next week will have to moderate, or have to wait to sell in fall. Most people get in the mood of" do I want to spend money on something I wont need for another 6 months?"

If you could nail that stove and hearth pad, maybe the venting for $1800 or there abouts, you would have a good stove if really little used. I say maybe the venting because I'm not sure what routing your venting has to take at the moment and his may or may not do the job entirely. All though, the 4" is always a good move.

Are you thinking direct vent out the back or straight out and up or up and then out ? I assume no chimney involved here, no fireplace ?
 
No chimney. Just a flat wall. Would prefer to direct vent out of the back to a wall thimble. Then run up the side of the house above the gable? If that is possible.

Probably so, as long as there is some vertical you get good draw in a power outage or good draw in general. You have to watch termination by windows and such. Local code and the install book for the stove rule on that.
 
Do you prefer the classic cast iron look or something more modern? The Quad Santa Fe has the same BTU in a modern look. With the current $250 coupon, you'd get a brand new one for $2000. If not, use this info to talk down the price on that Castile (a new one would be under 2750 with the coupon).

The coupon is valid on any new Quad pellet stove thru March 25, but you have to download it from Quad's web site today or tomorrow. Grab one now if you think you might buy a brand new stove. Also, check Harman's site... the HHT brands usually have similar deals.
 
You can download the manual for just about any stove you are interested in from the manufacturer web site. They contain very useful info on installation (clearances/etc), operation, cleaning, and maintenance.

Former NJ (Ocean County) resident here. You'll find good advice here all around. Don't rule out a pre-owned or factory refurb unit. I bought my Austroflamm Integra for $650 with a boatload of extra parts from a guy up in Saugerties NY. My philosophy has been: "buy it once, buy it right" and with the help of this forum I did exactly that.

Let us know what you decide!

Yes Harman is running $250 off some stoves now too. Same deal downloadable coupon from their site.

True, I read most of my P61 manual online in PDF before I ever bought it ! The XXV and Accentra 52i Insert too.

Swine Flue classic look. RKBAGUY. I'm outside of AC about 10-15 from Ocean City in Atlantic County. I heard back from the seller. I had asked in the Email to them."what was their bottom line" They responded give one and they will consider" I do like the look of the Harman XXV and Accentra.

If money is not an issue and you're looking for something top of the line I really like the Harman XXV too. The brown enamel model is very sharp looking.

A new Accentra will cost you another $1000 than the asking price of the Castile, plus install materials. However, it's also more BTU ( offering some reserve) and brand new with warranty and bottom feed vs drop feed ( top feed).

Did you make an offer ?

The XXV is a very quiet but powerful stove, 50,000 btu. We have two Harman dealers here, one had one running in a corner install when we were looking at stoves, you could barely hear it on low. Recently the other had one going on high and it was putting out serious heat. Some folks went through an auger noise situation here and I know someone with one that has required 3 igniters in the four years he has owned it. But that isn't saying much as it's a low example % of people who own them.

The Accentra is a kind of standby product, 40,000 btu a perfect fit power wise for up to 2000 sq ft or so.
 
I just purchased a Castile had to order one. Used the $250 off plus another 2 percent for using cash. Total was $2904 with tax.
 
I will. I have learn a lot these past few days. And I thank you all. If I cannot score the Castille then I will continue my search. Soon as the weather breaks there will be more fore sale on Craigslist hopefully. I will venture out this weekend to some shops out of town.
