Looking for wood burning inserts that will fit my fireplace!

  • Active since 1995, Hearth.com is THE place on the internet for free information and advice about wood stoves, pellet stoves and other energy saving equipment.

We strive to provide opinions, articles, discussions and history related to Hearth Products and in a more general sense, energy issues.

We promote the EFFICIENT, RESPONSIBLE, CLEAN and SAFE use of all fuels, whether renewable or fossil.
That all makes sense.

Regarding the size; a stove can protrude into the hearth and be bigger than what would fit in the fireplace. (At a cost of space used that an insert would not.)
Take the surround off of some insets and they can too. But then you have to have floor protection. And for a raised hearth it’s not required if you have your 16” out in front.

Mine is a freestander in an open fireplace, on an exterior wall. It does an ok job. Had a hearthstone, now a bk. Bk does better and has a fan. Ashford is not a great radiant heater since it's shrouded with cast. I think That opening is screaming for a 118 Jotul. Would looks great and heat 900 no problem.

I would classify your size as rather unusual. The height is 36”? And not very deep. This opening would not fit an insert very well with is shallow depth. Not many fireplaces for a freestanding BK. Looks good!

I probably wouldn't try to fit a free-standing stove into a fireplace anyway, unless it's really huge and goes all the way to the floor like @shoot-straight has.
That's what the inserts are for.
