I can't identify wood by looking at just the wood. I need to see bark as well, and twigs are really helpful, but we don't get too many pics of twigs posted here.
 
Twice I have taken a picture of the wood in the trailer and it didn't show up on my memory card for some reason. Tonight when I get home I will be taking another try at taking a picture of the trailer full as well as bark and editing my blog post.

methinks it's walnut?

Black walnut in particular has that shallow look to the bark, and the woodgrain looks similar.

Black walnut tress in particular are known to grow over indian burial grounds, and this certainly explains the camera trouble.
