I have a small fireplace, and have been trying to narrow my options. This is a common question and many thanks to all the previous threads ( here, here, and here ) and follow ups. I have put together a list for stoves with the smallest clearances.

Below is a list of all mantel clearances if available in the manual, unshielded unless specified. Many stoves do not list specific shielded clearances, but say something like "clearances may be reduced according to NFPA 211 specifications". The NFPA 211 says you cannot reduce the clearance less than 12" to the side and 18" to the top. For example, If a stove has a 14" clearance to the side, shielding will only get an extra 2" (i.e. min clearance must be 12"). To help with clearance in front of the stove, a glass hearth plate may be placed on the floor to get the stove out into the room.

I'd appreciate any thoughts or additions.

Probably want to put the Lopi Answer/1250 on that list.

Not being a typist myself, NFPA 2.11

Would you post a picture of your fireplace. That usually gets the geeks here stirred up. Add a stove and they go nuclear!!

Dboon, thanks. The Lopi 1250 looks like a top flue only? That's gonna be tough for a small fireplace. I didn't see any Mantel specs listed in the PDF either.

BKVP, thanks, will do. I think I'll start a separate thread just for it...

BKVP, The lopi looks like top vent only, so that takes it out of the running.

Thanks begreen.. I thought posted a follow up here, but seems I forgot to actually click POST.

Looking at NFPA 211 13.6.2.3, Unless clearance are explicitly listed, they cannot be reduced more than 12" to the side, or 18" to the ceiling. *sigh*

So now the hunt is strictly for stoves with clearance reductions listed in the manual, and those are few and far between.

Maybe come up with new plan and/or a different mantel or scheme altogether?

You can't reduce clearances of a listed stove at all unless reduction is allowed by the manufacturer. If it is allowed

I just saw your pictures of your beautiful fireplace. I also own a craftsman bungalow and love the style. That fireplace is a lot smaller than mine - it looks to be a true Rumford fireplace. I doubt that you will get any stove to fit in there and still meet the clearances to the side, and perhaps the top also. I hope you don't modify this beautiful woodwork in trying to fit a stove in there, but just appreciate it for what it is - a nice fireplace.

DBoon, We'll choose the woodwork over the stove ;-)

It seems "jacketed" stoves, or cast iron wrapped over steel have much smaller clearances, like the F45. Is there anyway to tell which stoves are jacketed?

This thread lists some.
