The chimney may have a coating of creosote that is getting rain washed down the flue tile. What does it look like at the top of the chimney? Is the crown in good shape? Is there a cover over the flue tiles in the chimney?

Also, the stove pipe connecting to the flue thimble is upside down. The crimped ends point toward the stove flue collar.

I don't know the brand but it's a free standing wood heater. We bought it when we built the house 25 years ago. Our wood insert is about 40 years or older. Never had a problem with it.

Yes the tiles are fine , cap is well fitted. We see no breaks in masonry work. I will look at the pipe but from what I remember the cramped edge is heater.

Well, there is a problem with it now.
What comes out can catch fire, and those fires can (and are known to do) burn down a home or two.

Regardless of previous decades, the current burning habits,.be it fuel suitability or air settings, are not right and leading to annoying dirt and increased danger.

Our questions are aimed to rectify what is going wrong here.

Does the stove have a baffle in the top of the firebox and secondary air tubes (tubes with small holes) just below the baffle?

Do you check what comes out of the chimney when you have settled in the stove? If you have those tubes there should be no smoke. If there is, the stove is not operating in a safe and clean way, leading to the pics above.

Post a picture of the chimney top if possible.
The stove pipe is upside down.

Yes. That'll give the opportunity for stuff to run out.
But stuff should not be present in the first place.
And if the horizontal run doesn't have a slight upward slope in the gas flow direction, it can run out there regardless of whether it was assembled in the correct direction or not.

Is it possible the flue tiles are undersized for the OP's stoves to be run at the same time?
Wondering if this could be a cause.
