Largest Oak I've Ever Seen

Omaha: Is this it, the Compton oak, (Quercus comptoniae) ? Purportedly a natural hybrid between Q. virginiana and Q. lyrata.
A couple sites mention that it was planted in the 1930's !

Think that is the tree but not buying that age. Betting much older than that.

Looks like it. Transplanted in the 1930's according t the article. I thought this tree would be much older than that.

That's a trip. I did cut a willow oak Sat that was 20" and less than 20 years old so I guess in wide open space and no competition, they can grow really fast. God knows Williamsburg has plenty of heat and moisture

Tree diameter can be deceptive (sometimes tree height is a better gauge for tree age estimation for a known site type). I've cut and seen cookies from forest-grown sugar maple that has been suppressed for decades (4" sapling that is 40+ years old); while arborists in this area will tell you that they have yet to remove an urban pin oak (40"+ DBH) that is any older than 90 years old.
