I just replaced the thermocouple in a Heatilator gas fireplace because the pilot light wouldn't stay lit. That fixed that problem, but when I tested it out before putting the log set back in, I'm getting this gigantic orange flame coming from where the gas enters the burner. I cleaned out the little ports in the burner and messed with the air shutter a little, but nothing seems to make this go away. No bueno. This was not an issue before I replaced the thermocouple.

Any ideas?

Check the gas pressure and the orifice to see if it is clear. Is this LP or natural gas?

Check other gas fired appliances, if you have no other gas appliances check with your neighbours. Impurities in the gas will cause yellow flames. Noticed big yellow flames in our furnace, talked to a coworker(certified gas fitter) and he suggested we check the gas fired hot water tank flame, same thing. His explanation was impurities in the natural gas feed. A couple days later we were back to blue flame.
