I bought four tons of pellets from TSC and they forgot to mark that I had picked up the first ton. I informed the guy when he mark that I picked up the second ton that I already had picked up a ton. He replied that I could have gotten another ton and they would have never known; I told him that I would not have accepted the extra ton even though I could use it. I would not feel right doing so and I think down the road you will end up being rewarded for your honesty. You would not want some one doing this to you so why would you do it to some one else or to a company.

Happened to me last year with Lowe's. Needed another small Husky saw and looked at the website using my local store. Husky 142 showed a price of $99. Couldn't be right. Looked using other locations and they all said $199. Called. Told the woman on the phone I wanted to order a saw but I thought they had a pricing error on the website. She got indignant like I was trying to cheat them or something. I hung up. Called again and pretty much got the same treatment. Asked to speak to a supervisor. Supervisor went through the same drill and finally asked me if I wanted a chainsaw or not because they were busy. Told her yeah. Two of them. She gave me back to the girl and two days later they arrived on my doorstep. Two saws for a $198 plus $4.50 UPS shipping.

The idiots.

A month later I go to pick up a two thousand dollar garden tractor I ordered. After forever they bring a pallet out with the cardboard torn off and a rain soaked tractor with a flat tire on a busted pallet. I commented about the condition. Kid got real snippy with me. I looked at him and said I wanted another tractor. He asked what my problem was and turned to his buddy and laughed. I looked at him and said "Not my problem you little chit. It is your problem. You just brought out a $2,700 tractor and sat it down on my trailer. Wrong one junior. Mine is a two thousand dollar tractor and if you don't go get it right now it I am hauling this one home and letting you deal with the manager when they close out tonight."

Didn't know a forklift could move that fast.

dont know what things are like in your neck of the woods, but i get taken advantage of every single day
50 cents to go to the store because they put a highway toll by my house
$20 to park at a giants game and $25 to park in atlantic city
gas is expensive along with car insurance
they are raising my property tax
its 9.75 for a movie ticket 6.50 for popcorn and 4.50 for a 20oz of water...i can get a 32 case of bottled water for 4.24 at sams
people drive like nuts and there is a ton of traffic everywhere
my small town is built up like crazy and you cant even get around on the main roads w/o a 10 inute drive taking 40
everything in my life is a hassle and expensive so when a big box store makes a mistake i will take it
I would have no problem whatsoever taking that deal from the Home Despot. If they don’t have competent people, which at my local store they don’t, that’s their problem. Would the Depot be calling you if you got over-charged? Did you go in looking to get that deal? No. Is the Depot the least helpful place on the planet? Yes. Good for you.

There are two possibilities.....
You are making the story up to stir up some controversy on this board, or if it is true, I heard people like you are called low lifes.
If it is the second possibility, I have to say glad that you are not in my neighborhood.
And I wish you get off this board

you can read my other posts they are all legit, i had no idea this would happen

and you have no right to wish me off this board, i am not a low life, just made a judgement call, that you dont agree with, i still have worthy input and deserve to be on this

i dont usually do this type of thing, i have returned a pair of shoes when i realized they charged me a few bucks less, and i have had opportunities to rip people off and not taken them

thought the moral of your story was going to be that you got a chainsaw for free but got a busted up tractor as your karma

we as a company do a lot of buisness with home depot as well as lowes, i personally spent close to a grand at our local lowes last weekend on stuff for the house, i have found our local lowes to be a very nice place to shop. most of the folks who work there though they may not know everything generally are smart enough to explain what they think from what they know. i see "contractors" in there giving them a hard time sometimes because they might bring out the wrong product or somthing and i want to walk over and ask "if you know what you need carry your lazy arse over there and pick it out" big box stores are populated with folks who work there , these are people not "a representive of the company's ideals" and they still get treated like dirt by some folks just because they wear an orange or blue vest and may not know everything. some of these people go out of their way to learn more about the products in their appointed isles and some dont , its an individual thing apparantly i wouldnt bash the whole chain based on the less than perfect response from an individual worker in one of hundreds of stores.

OTOH as far as "getting over" its up to you. you can point out a mistake and pay what you should have (and probably was planning to) or you can let them overlook the mistake and walk out with somthing you really didnt pay full price for. now , this oversight will likely not have an immediate effect on the person who loaded you , but when time comes for inventory and audits someone at the store is going to be in a fix, and he may not have even been at the store that day. your concience not mine, personally i like sleeping soundly.

glad you returned those shoes....make's it easier to (beat feet) back to the store you owe so much to....

You did not even make an effort to correct the problem, you even brag.
That's what I find low class.
You stood there and did nothing to correct the problem even you know it was wrong.
Today, the Wood Pellets tomorrow it is probably something else. Or just think something similar like that would happen to you - roles reversed
I'm not your father to teach you what's right or wrong.
Did you ever hear the word Ethics. If everyone would be like that, we would have Anarchy in this Country.
Just my 2cents!!
Note: And I'm no friend of big box stores either - it's the principle

Ah, don't we all pontificate about what we would do. Honest abes, all of us - but somehow this country is going to Chit because it seems like everyone is on the take......

I don't think that most folks feel bad for Home Depot or Wal-Mart when they get undercharged.......and each situation is obviously different. There have been times when "complaining" about being undercharged at a big box would have probably gotten the cashier in trouble.....what the heck to do? Maybe I should have called Sam Walton and complained......

I think this kind of stuff falls in the category of "judge not" - and while in my current (flush) situation I may be able to afford a high level of self-righteousness, I can certainly understand that a senior on a fixed income is not going to complain when CVS gives them a double count of their heart pills!

So let it be, folks........I can assure you HD won't miss it.....

Speaking of HD, I have heard from folks down south close to the original management and founders.....that the company has run downhill really fast. When they started they were all about fair wages, good customer service, giving back BIG time to the community, getting along with vendors, etc.

As things have progressed and management changed, they got stingy with all of the above - stopped supporting local causes to the level they were, etc. etc.

Not mentioning that as a reason to take advantage of them or not - just a reason why Lowes and other companies might end up with a leg up on them....

How can you say that you had no idea?? Go back to August 4th and read your posts about how you read the sign wrong and thought they were 124.50 per ton. You even said that you had a phone conversation with a store employee about the descrepency in the price. Now you are telling us that you had no idea that this would happen and were surprised when it did. So they charged you the price that you incorrectly read on the sign? And you didn't make the connection? I'm confused???

bravo;

how do we gain if we profit only by the misfortune of others...

Definition of capitalism, my friend........

The ideal is to pay someone as little as you can, even if they produce 5x as much money as you pay them....isn't it?

Oh well, I'll have to close this thread in a bit.......we'll all go to church sunday and pray for HD.

maybe it was a low class move but that doesnt mean i am a low life
i was rung up the first time at a per bag price of $5.98 for 100
before i signed i noticed it seemed high and asked if they were charging tax.....they called over another salesman to confirm the price. he said 2.49/bag for a ton without even going over there to check on the other side of the store... i said are you sure? he said yes,
she rang me up for the 100 bags at 2.49 and before i went to sign i asked again are you sure this is the price? she said yes
so i replied i will take every bag you have in stock for this price, not anticipating the extra $50 off
they had 146 left, now she was annoyed she had to ring me up three times and didnt even read the coupon to see it should be 50 off 500, she just glanced at it like she didnt care what it said and just wanted to get it over with

this is the thread form 8/3
https://www.hearth.com/talk/threads/20923/

proves the sign was confusing and they knew it a few weeks afo
so i didnt exactly say that it was wrong but gave them the opportunity to double/triple check and they couldnt be bothered
i did take advantage of them but still dont think it makes me a low life

Or more Enrons.

It occurs to me this is a real-life example of the prisoners' dilemma. In a non-zero-sum game like this, the original poster's behavior is the "right" one for his individual best interests even though it is ultimately not in the best interests of society as a whole, or even himself in the long run (if everyone behaves as he did, costs continue to rise for everyone and he gets screwed later). It's only when someone breaks the cycle of self-interest that the socially (and ultimately individually) more optimal altruistic results occur.

This is fascinating :-)

Who cares?? I'm sure Arthur Blank is more concerned about the foking Mike Vick gave him!
Take the money and run!!

go to hd first thing in the am...then attend afternoon services....you'll probally be "ok" for another week.....

I say enjoy your reduced price pellets !!! When the big box stores pay a better wage, they will get a better qualified employee. I've even seen them KNOW they made a mistake in the customers favor and shrug it off. When you are getting shafted at every turn (as you stated earlier), you have to relish the times you get a break. If you didn't go in and change the price tags yourself, you have nothing to feel guilty about. If you got a break on price...... that is the big box store's problem.

Well he did give them a coupon he knew to be invalid and let the girl give him the extra $50 off. It does raise the question as to which is the price of his dishonesty - the $ he saved on the pellets or the $50 extra he knew he didn't deserve.

Craig's right - it's easy to be self-righteous but my wife & I were just discussing this thread and it seems to be hard to draw clear lines. Her example had to do with the change situation - if the cashier gave me an extra $20 in change, would I give it back? Definitely yes if I discover the error at the register...even if I'm in the parking lot on the way to the car...but no if I've gotten home and realized it - I'm just not going to drive back. On the other hand, if it were $1,000 I would even if I discovered it at home. So in addition to the amount of money involved, there's an effort factor that plays into it. I don't know exactly where between 20 and 1,000 I'd drive back to the store, but I know she's right about the 20.

I'm in agreement with Digger that this kind of stuff present a dilemma. If one can honestly say that they think the senior citizen or indebted ill person should give back the extra pills mistakenly put in their vial (from CVS), then they have a clear leg to stand on. Until one walks in other shoes, they don't know what they would do.

Heck, many of us would eat our friends if our very survival depended on it. Getting deep here, folks........

WHAAAATTTTT !!!!!!!!! Eat my friends ? Speak for yourself Craig !!!!! LOL I think YOU went beyond deep with that statement !
Remember, a country boy can survive, without eating his friends.
LMAO

Heck, they prayed as they ate their friends....and guess what?
They become 100% the political and business leaders of California and the west (still are today)......that is, the ones that did the eating! The others, sad to say, didn't make it to the bay area.
