Hi folks. I recently got a Jotul F12 from a client I did some work for last spring. They hadn’t used it in over 15 years. I’m wondering if its worth rebuilding and using or if I should put my money towards a new stove. I don’t mind putting a little work into something I got for free. Free is my favorite word as a scavanging general contractor. The rear and right side burn plates both have cracks in them measuring at least 1/2” wide. Would I possibly be able to braze these and they still do their job? Both pieces of door glass need to be replaced. The catalyst combustor needs to be replaced, I think? I’m not sure what a bad CC looks like as this would be my first time using a catalytic stove. It’s not broken apart, but it is a bit dirty. All gasket rope needs to be replaced. I don’t know if there is anything else I should look into for damage or maintenance. I’ve read through this forum and have learned that this stove is very problematic and expensive to repair depending on the part. However, I see that some people swear by it. Any experts on this stove have some advice? Thank you.

It's scrap sorry

What makes you think it’s scrap? Certainly these parts must have replacements, even if they are pricey.
They were not good performing stoves when they were new and they are horrible in terms of reliability. Honestly it's one of the worst stove designs made. The vc winter warm is the only stove from a major manufacturer that gives them a run for that honor.

I was afraid of that. I’ve read a lot on this stove model and have been seeing the same thing you are saying. I have a beautiful stone fireplace in my log cabin that looks nice, but does not heat efficiently. I was hoping this stove was my free ticket to wood burning efficiency. I think I may possibly repair the Jotul and install in my garage and see for myself how truly bad this stove is. I’ll be on the lookout for a new stove for my house. Thank you for the information and reply.

Just so you know solid fuel burners are not allowed by code in garages in the US.

Honestly have never known that. Nearly everybody in rural Eastern Maine where I live who use their garage for doing any sort of work has a wood stove in it. Then again, code somewhat goes out the window in rural Maine unless it’s commercial.

Until something goes wrong and you need insurance
