Does anybody have experience with the Josef Davidssons Viking 30? We have an unused (lined) chimney in the kitchen, and we'd toyed with the idea of bringing a small woodstove back to the room, but the necessary clearances for most stoves made it impractical. This stove says it requires only 5 cm light concrete as a firewall on each side of the range, making it a viable option for our design...if we could get one in the States.

The YouTube video I found on it wasn’t any help at all.

I know. The British dealer was looking to work with a North American dealer, but I don't think that's happened yet. Have you seen anything similar in the US? We have a unused chimney in the kitchen, which is a relatively small room (19th century home). The old cook stove that was in there took up way too much real estate. Something similar to this would be just what we need for heat in the winter and a cook surface when the power goes out.

I have not, but I haven’t been looking.

You might want to give Obadiah’s a call. They have a lot of experience with cook stoves.

I'm continuing to add my research to this thread in case it helps someone else dow the road. Rizzoli said the only small unit they can sell in the US is the Rizzoli ML60 Classic Wood Cook Stove.

The stove is 33.5" H x 24" W x 24" D and the clearances (according to an email from Rizzoli) are:
-1 cm on the sides
-17 cm in the rear part
-80 cm in front
-60 cm upward

I found the following specs online:

I got the Viking30 shipped from the UK to Ireland. Had it installed during the Summer (finally). Now the colder weather has come, the stove insists on smoking into the room 😫😫. I have been told as the house next door is higher than mine, it impacts on the draw causing a vacum . I've increased the length of the twin flue and the smoke continues to flow into the room. I've read a heat gun may help heat the flue before lighting a fire . Such drama 🙃. I am hoping to find a solution or I will be taking the stove out ☹️.

Yes, the flue situation may be the culprit.
But also: do you have (kitchen or bathroom) fans exhausting air? That would compete with the draft.

@ stoveliker, I do have those but not switched on when when lighting a fire. Most of the time, the "fire" tends to burns itself out. I'm nearly taking bets to see how long the flame lasts 🙃. I think I have created a new past time!

Preheat the flue before starting a fire. You can hold a piece or two of newspaper near it, use a torch or a blow-dryer, lighting a candle in the stove for a bit before lighting, anything to warm up the flue and get a draft started. BTW, I don't know about Ireland, but in the US kiln dried doesn't necessarily mean it's cooked long enough to dry the wood below 20% MC. Many places here just cook the wood long enough to kill the bugs and wet wood will definitely cause a lot more smoke. How tall is your flue from the top of the stove to the top of the chimney?

Hey Kborndale, the flue is about 7 meters high. It was extended by 1.5 meters yesterday.
I tried the newspaper trick but it only smoked out. I bought a heat gun today, heated internal stove for 5 minutes and the stove continued to smoke into the kitchen.
The wood is dried to less than 20% moisture.
I am going to attach two photos. One taken this evening but as it was already dark, I don't think you can make out much. I'll take a better one in the morning. The daytime photo is after installation before the extra 1.5 meter was added.

What happens if you stuff the entire firebox full of crumpled newspaper? Will it smoke the entire time it burns, or will the draft get started?

Try top down fire starts. They have helped many people here.
How do you know your wood is under 20%?

Finally got a proper daytime photo. The smoke draw works on occasion. When it's calm or frost is touching the ground, then the tranquility of a smokeless kitchen dissappears 😪

I don't think it's only the house next door, it's your own; your chimney cap is barely (if at all) above your own roof ridge.

Wind can curl down over a roof ridge, leading to pressure into the top of the chimney.

☹️☹️ Thank you. I was hoping to keep the installation discreet in order not to draw attention to it. If I go higher, a more secure bracketing will be required, which I reckon will be a big job itself 😔
