It will be a lot quicker than trying to split it by hand, or your hospital time for body injuries ;-)
Unless you have a really underpowered saw, it should be fine on the saw as long as you don't push too hard. Give the saw a break, and keep your chain sharp.
It might be best to use a skip tooth chain if you're doing a lot of this as it will ease the load and cut down the chip congestion. Maybe some more experienced hands can comment on that.
