I feel your pain. I've split and stacked all my wood, and am after more this weekend, but right NOW- I'm sooo ready to add to the stacks.

If he had a Fiskars it would already be split
Or at least he could just walk the axe out to the woodpile and go back in and listen to the rounds split in fear of the Fiskars

I've built a temporary roof and wind protector and split at night in the snow / cold / rain before. ( 5:30 PM isn't night in August ) - that's about the only way to do it in December unless you can work in your garage.

This evening, I hung a 500 watt flood light nearby and went to work. It was nice and cold out. Good idea on the tarp
This is too funny. I was just out last night splitting in the dark. I do have good outside lighting and a hydraulic splitter (with headlights), but it still cracked me up that we were splitting at night.
Do a search, it's basically taking an old tire and setting it up on a splitting block to hold the rounds while you split. A real back saver when you don't have to bend over and reset the wood every time.
I've also seen the bungee cord method which is the same idea. I think I actually saw that on this site.
