If you are going to live there a long time, put in what you want. If you will be selling in five or ten years, you will need a gas, oil, or electric system for primary heat. Ask a realtor for input.

2500 heating degree days. Warm average temperatures in the winter. Definitely ask your neighbors about heat pumps.

We are in Maryland so we are kind of middle of the road as far as winter goes. This year like everyone we are having a very mild winter. We were heating with oil and it would cost us about $3000 this year based on the prices. We spent $1000 and bought a pellet stove. I guess in total between the hearth dh built and the piping it was another $500 tops. Then 4 tons of pellets which we have only burned 1.5 of. We will burn a lot less once we get a thermostat hooked up. Not only will we have saved $ already this year but we are so much warmer. We used to run our heat at 65-67 to keep costs down. Now we are at a comfortable 72 or higher depending on the day. For comfort alone it is worth it.
