BTW, does the volume of responses you've received answer your "Do you mind if I ask a question?" question? This is what we do for fun, in between holding down jobs, lives, and that litany of wood chores that Jake listed. You're going to start doubting the likelihood of that when you see how much time is spent on hearth.com. The real question probably should be, "Is a wood stove practical if you hang out on the forum full time?"

I would suggest avoiding the stove in the kitchen and going with the insert that's more centrally located, as you said. The kitchen is typically a place where you are more active, plus cooking can generate considerable heat. We have our stove on the opposite end of the house relative to our kitchen, so the kitchen is always cooler than the living room with the insert, and it works nicely this way for us. If you're having to be active in a very warm room, it may not be as comfy for you.

Looks like you got some great responses. I think an exceptional effort should always be rewarded so I just wanted to commend firefighter Jake on his sermons on this thread. Sorry, I don't have money to send. My guess is that once you realize the physical and possibly financial benefits of wood heating you might decide to take it a step further. If not, I hope you enjoy the part time experience and I think you will. In case you haven't heard, dry wood is very important. Good luck, Kevin

Overhear, I have read this entire thread and as usual folks here will help you anyway they can and sure have given you a lot to think about. I have been hooked for many years (insert in the fireplace in our living room) and only recently did I realize my wife is too. I didn't think she really cared about it until we remodeled our kitchen and she announced she wanted her own "little stove" in her kitchen. Jaugust124 posted (#12 in this thread) a link to the thread on our kitchen install. Just to let you know, my wife loves it and can't wait until next winter to really burn it. Reading between the lines, I am just thinking you are going to be hooked too. So you might have to convince your husband as I did my wife (it only took 35 or so years) Good luck and enjoy.

The bottom line is that working full time and heating with wood can be done. We did it for twenty years with a 40 mile commute. You just don't let anybody get between you and the door at quitting time because ya gotta get home and feed that stove.
Any way you figure it you beat the cost of the central heating unit doing the job while you aren't there. May not do the whole job but it will do enough of it to make a major dent in the bills.

The Marine stoves are cute, but not EPA and pretty small for this case. You are on the right track for a starter stove in the kitchen. Odds are it's going to get addicting and you will be moving up to a bigger stove at some point, but maybe not. In the meantime your initial choices are good ones.
