Problem is that black walnut leaves can alternate too..

Here you need to be very careful when differentiating with the word "alternate".... the word alternate has different meanings for compound leaves vs simple leaves.

Black walnut has alternate compound leaves. See the image below:

Within each compound leaf-set, each simple leaf of a black walnut tree will not alternate along the stem. However each leaf-set or compound leaf does alternate along the main branch.

When you are splitting black walnut, everybody within a block will know it by the smell.

It started making its way onto the heap this evening and there was very little smell. Split like a dream.

Man, you're getting me all excited to split mine now, instead of waiting til next spring as I had originally planned! Those splits look great, I love the two-tone look in the rings.

Go for it, it is easy splitting. I've tried to make my processing setup as easy and production like as possible so that I can keep up with it as I get it. Good thing as the same tree guy called me last night and has another few loads for me tomorrow.

Its all firewood now other than a couple crotches that are headed for the neighbor's fire pit.

20 cords??!! I'd love to have 20 cords seasoning in my little back yard! Do you sell or is this all for personal use?

Yep and 8 that's been under a roof since last October for this year. The problem with selling it is that it is all scrounged and I cut very little of it. My splitter does 24 and my stove ideal is 18. Anything under 24 gets split as is. Anything that is longer than 24 gets cut to 18. I burn all the cutoffs in the shoulder season and only the ideal stuff gets stacked under the roof. The nice thing about the big firebox is I can burn the chuglies most of the time and get away with it.
