I've just read so many posts where the newbies are missing the obvious, and I managed to do the same, and everyone here over the years answer/ask the same questions again and again. Kudos.

If we sneered at, ridiculed, pooh-poohed, made fun of the newbies...or just sent them off to search the archives, then we'd never have any oldbies around, so there wouldn't be a Hearth.com. At the core of the Hearth.com philosophy (if there is such a thing) are courtesy, respect, tolerance, good humor, and an arms wide open welcoming attitude. Yeah, we see the same old questions time and time again...but if I just don't feel like addressing it at the moment I see it, I know there'll be another of us here who will not hesitate to jump right back in and do his/her best to help out. Then others will join in. Seems to work pretty well. Welcome! Rick

Even though you had a cat stove it looks like it was running as a smoke dragon for a while so I will go ahead and add that you will need well seasoned wood to be Truly happy with any epa approved stove you chose.

If this has already been discussed or something you were well aware of then disregard.

Yes, and no.

While I love the PE insert, I'd go with a free standing stove in a different section of the house.

I love the 13, but burn times are 5-6 hours max, heats for another hour before temps go down. I'd go with a bigger fire box just for the longer burn times.

Some one correct me if I am wrong, but that 13 insert will probably have the same size fire box as the 13 stove. Again 5-6 hour burn times. Keep that in mind.

How's your fire wood supply????

Welcome to the forums !! Always nice to see a new member of "Da Sistahood" here ;)
Nice ta meet ya!

We came to the conclusion this stove is not big enough for us. I also want bigger blowers with variable speed. Pretty horse!

No worries on the wood, we are long time burners. We moved to a new state last fall and had to leave alot of good wood behind:mad: so we had to buy wood. The last batch was wet, but its all we could get.... 3 dry cords ready for this season and we know not to buy from him again... The first 5 cords we bought last fall were seasoned, we will that company again this year, as well as add to our rotation, alot of beetle kill here, the cut zones are alot closer too. So many of you have an excellent eye here to pick up on details. Awesome!

PS the home was a rental before we bought it, convinced the stove was abused for along time...

Be quiet, she'll hear you, and inflate The Queens head even more :p

You'll find it :)

HotCoals, can we use this without a cat?
You could but you shouldn't.
You will get way more heat and way less pollution with it. Not that much money and it will last for years.

Going for the englander insert, it fits in the budget that now needs creosote removal/chimney relining/new adapters/new stove.... I'd prefer to refurb the BK, but I can't do the labor and DH is overextended and sleep deprived, I'm sure others can relate. Our hearth is not tall enough for a freestanding, or atleast the ones I've looked at (24'H). We will have stoke it more often, but are pro's at using non-cat stoves so we should be fine. I found a few highend models that would be ideal, bigger blowers and larger fireboxes, we will get one of those as soon as we win the lottery LOL

I'm sure it will do the job!
Stay warm this winter and enjoy!
