Just bought an old rambler in MN. It has 2 fireplaces. Just pulled useless glass doors on the one in the basement. Opening is 35 1/2 wide by 22 1/2 high.
After I started looking at inserts I found that opening is pretty short. Any suggestions? The house I sold I had a Blaze King King. So I am pretty spoiled by that . I was hoping to put the the biggest one I could in there. But that ain't gonna happen the way it looks.

It wouldn't bother me but the wife says no. The step is 11 inches high and 17 inches deep.

Need the depth, but for starters, look at Lopi inserts. The Answer and Medium Flush Hybrid are under 22" high.

Thanks. I will look at specs on them tonight. I guess what I want is the biggest firebox that is 22" or under. It must be a challenge hooking up an insert when it is tight in there. when I choose something I think I will make something out of wood that is the size of the stove and try to shove it in there. I noticed the P.E. summit LE is right at 22 1/2 for minimum size. I think that is 1/2 inch clearance. How hard would it be to hook it up? I'm thinking I could shove it over to the side reach in and hook it up and then slide it to the center. Am I dreaming?

I thought of the Sirocco, but there is only 1/8" wiggle room, assuming a flat fireplace floor.

It is possible to connect some inserts with an inside fastener in the liner.
The PE Super insert is 20 7/8" H.

there is more room because it angles up from the 22 1/2 dimension as you go back in the fire box. Hopefully that saves me. Thats why I want to make a "wooden" stove 1st to shove it in for a trial to see if I can get my hand in there.

Once an insert is selected, mock one up out of cardboard taped together to test for fit.

Yes, that's the idea. SBI used to sell a product for this method too. There is also this flex starter collar that works from inside the firebox.

will blaze king sirocco, ashford, and princess inserts all hookup thru the firebox? or just Sirocco? I didn't know that option existed. Thanks for that info. All I have ever used is free standing stoves.

FLUE COLLAR INSTALLATION ON SIROCCO OR ASHFORD
  1. Once the liner has been dropped down the chimney, it must be securely attached to the fl ue collar assembly (refer to the “CHIMNEY CONNECTIONS” section).Note: Ensure the fl ue collar assembly will hang roughly 2’ (607 mm) above the fl oor of the fi replaceonce attached to the chimney liner as this will ease the connection to the appliance once it is pushed into the fi replace opening.
  2. Open the appliance loading door and remove the bypass shield (Fig. 9) using a 7/16” wrench and set it aside.
  3. Open the bypass door (refer to “OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS” section) in order to gain access to reach upthrough the appliance to grab hanging fl ue collar assembly.
  4. Pull the fl ue collar assembly down to align the bolts with the through holes in the rear of the fi rebox thenpull forward.Note: Ensure the underside of the fl ue collar assembly is sliding along the top side of the fi reboxas the gasket of the fl ue collar assembly must be properly seated to ensure a good seal. FEEL THEAREA WHERE THE FLUE COLLAR MAKES CONTACT WITH THE FIREBOX; IF THERE IS A GAP, THEFLUE COLLAR IS NOT SEATED PROPERLY AND NEEDS TO BE REALIGNED.
  5. Once a good seal has been confi rmed, fasten the fl ue collar assembly to fi rebox with the hardware used during its removal.Note: Ensure the nuts are tightened evenly to ensure a good seal.6. Reinstall the bypass shield and close the bypass door before sliding the appliance into its fi nal position within the fi replace opening.
