I need a good axe

Fiskars left me a message saying the new 36"fiskars can be ordered at your local ACE hardware.So I went to my local ACE and ordered one.I was told it will be in the store 1/17/2011 for $50.00.I'm like a kid at Christmas time.Now I'll see what all the noise is about when I attack some need splitting maple rounds though the big test will be that quarter cord of Elm rounds that keeps laughing at me.

I got a message from ACE last night basically stating that they didn't carry the X27.<sigh> (The left hand knowing what the....). I think the CS rep that responded is in India/Pakistan/Sudan/somewhere and simply looked at the same website we look at and didn't see it listed. It only makes sense that ACE will be carrying it. Here's a copy of that email:

Ya you might have to go to your local ACE and put an order for what you want.They will place the order while you wait and tell you approx.when the item will be at their warehouse.They'll then call you when the item is at their store for you to come for pick up.This method has always worked for me.

It's possible that the wood wasn't completely dry when it was fitted to the head also. You can bed it in epoxy for a great fit also.

Could also be that the head was abused by using the poll as a sledge to pound wedges. That can result in a deformed eye.

This is true.My daddy always said never hit the back of an axe with a sledge.It'll damage the axe.Since I was hardheaded I did just that and eventually broke the head.RIP dad I hear you now.

The Super Splitter is great for the big stuff, but is overkill on the easier stuff (splits smaller than 9" diameter on easy splitting wood like Maple or Alder). The SS goes through that wood so quickly that I'm concerned about hitting the ground, so I wind up spending a lot of energy trying to get my swing just hard enough to split, but not so hard that it'll go through to China. The Pro Splitter weighs half as much, and is just the thing for finishing up the rounds you started with the SS. I just got a PS because, according to the Fiskars website, they're discontinuing the 28" 2.25 LB splitting axe when the new axes come out.

The handles are all guaranteed forever. They're not wood, but the fiberglass/plastic handle is comfortable to hold. I've split about 3 cords with my SS and no loosening yet, but it's still pretty new.

I Recently purchased a 8lb truper maul and after 3 cord in 2 days the handle is cracked. I bought it with a fiberglass handle hoping to avoid this. Has anyone else had this happen? Could it be from the temps in the teens. I normally split with a 27 ton splitter but one of my wood stashes isn't the most convenient to drag the splitter too. I've been looking at other mauls but most I see, to me, seem to have very light heads. 3-5 lbs. Now I've never tried splitting with a maul with these lighter heads though. I also have a truper 12lb head that I also recently got and splits fine. can go about 3 hrs with it so not sure what is the advantage with a much light head. Any suggestions?

It is also very nice to hear the crack of the wood with out the noise of an engine

I have an axe, a hatchet, a maul plus two wedges, and a Fiskars' SuperSplitster. I have not used the axe in several years. I bought it to chop down some large maple and cherry trees in the yard when I had very little income, but wanted some more sunlight for gardening. In later years, I have hired folks with chainsaws to tackle these jobs. Now, I rely on other tools. They (plus a chainsaw) have served me well. I still use the hatchet to chop small branches and to split kindling.

Been using the same one my whole life. It has a piece broke out of the handle right at the head from misses. So I picked up another one a few years ago (probably closer to 10) and I'm still using the broken one. About every ten years you need to replace the springs. (Spring and clip kit is $7) They would probably last longer if I wouldn't leave it outside on a fairly regular basis. Built the hydraulic splitter a year or two ago so the chopper one doesn't see much action anymore. Still get it out sometimes just for fun and to teach my sons how to appreciate the hydraulic splitter. LOL

I spoke with someone at Fiskars yesterday about the X27.

She said that Fiskars, here in the United States, just recently got a shipment of the axes from Finland.

She also said they've been shipped to the Ace Hardware "warehouse" and that they should start to be distributed to the various stores now.

As far as Amazon goes, Fiskars still doesn't even have an order from them yet. So no idea when they'll be available from Amazon.

I'm looking into a maul but still not sure what to get. The X27 that is so desirable seems like it is an efficient axe. My only concern is would this be an axe that you would want to split a log that is blocked up? or pound it on the ground. I've always used a hydraulic splitter so i'm just getting into swinging a maul. I got the truper 12lb maul which i feel i can blast logs on frozen ground and does work great in doing so. I bought a 8lb truper maul which i cracked the handle on in only 2 cord of wood. is there a compromise between the finesse of the X27 and the speed of hitting logs where they lay on the ground?

I just got the 2.25 pro splitter a couple of months ago. I really didn't think you could go below four pounds and have an effective splitter but this little pro splitter is excellent. I might see if I can find another one to purchase as a backup before they completely disappear from the shelves.
