On cbc news this morning.... Some canadian were stock for days in last month avalanche in Nepal last month were in danger of death, higher avalanche risk and just no way to get anywhere, so they got evacuated by helicopter. Because nobody was hurt nor needing medical treatment ( despite the fact they would have a died if the helicopter would have bot pick then up) the insurance refuse to pay the helicopter bill. The pre requisist for helicopter bill is if someone needed medical care..... As no one was dying yet, no bill paid !!! This is just crazy....

Chip even if you didn't have medical insurance and were hospitalized in Newfoundland, the kind people of Newfoundland would likely hold lobster suppers and raise money to pay for your bills themselves!!! lol

Hi Andrew,

You're right! Newfoundlanders are some of the most generous and welcoming folks in the world. But, even they charge for medical services. Once, I had to make a trip to the hospital in Nfld. for a minor medical procedure. I anticipated a $300-400 charge because that would have been my cost in the States for the same procedure several years earlier if I didn't have health insurance. As it turned out, I got a bill from Canada about 6 months later for $75. I agree with you that this thread should not be about the pros and cons of national health care but I bet you can guess where I would come down.

Ha ha. I understand Chip. ;)

Now imagine staying in a hospital, critical care, for weeks. During that time you expect that your insurance is going to pay. As you get discharged, you get handed a bill. I'd end up right back in the ER with cardiac problems :)

We were at my buddy's house near Souris in PEI. We stopped in the local "pizza" joint and told the owner (who he knew from being in the area for a while) we wanted a meat pie made up so we could cook it in the oven that night. She told us it'd be ready in the afternoon.
We stopped back and the shop was closed (as she often did whenever she felt like it) there was a note on the door, "Steve, pie is in your fridge" Since most doors are never locked, we got back to the house and it there is was with hand written cooking instructions laid out on the counter. ;lol

I love that area.

PEI rocks. I wish I could move there...
