I didn't light the stove today! Anyone else out there go without heating?Temp from 65-72 in 45 minut

It's about 2 degrees C here in Niagara...had the stove going over night and reloaded at 5 this morning before going to work..I'm letting it burn out today...probably clean her out and polish the glass...suppose to have snow heading my way tomorrow and continuing through the week.

Hey guys.

I only had 3 fires in 1 week. My wife is pregnant, she doesn't like it hot. In mild weather I simply use electricity.

In order to heat my mainfloor, I gotta heat my entire basement first (it's completely wide open; I am currently in the midst of finishing it). That means I need to get the basement to 23-24 C and then the heat will rise upstairs via my staircase (no grates in my floor yet). That can take 3-4 hours (from the time when I light it to the time I feel a temperature difference upstairs). It's been 0 to +2 C for the past 2 weeks, not really worth heating with wood. It takes a considerable amount of wood to get my house temp up and since my wife doesn't like it hot, the utilities are not screaming either.

My electricity bill is about $100-$125 a month for 2550 square feet. When it's really cold I use wood, when it's mild like now I sometimes make a small fire to take the dampness from the basement and help upstairs. I don't like turning the heat on in my basement, since it's wide open and not finished, it would cost me about $5-$7 a day to heat JUST the basement.

Hence, I am only lighting fires sometimes in the evening. When and if it get's colder, I will fire it up again

Only burned in the morning & at bedtime yesterday.
I loaded up at midnight last night, and just reloaded at 6:00PM this evening. Its still 73 in here, but put 3 splits in to keep steady temp ready for this evenings 20's temps.
It ain't a Blaze King, but my Summit after 18 hours was at 200 degrees and still had more than enough coals to get the new load going. Even after 4 seasons with the Summit now, I learn more each year, and progress as a better burner each year. Getting the stove fixed up sure helped alot too. I just reloaded all my bins in the living room. I got 14 days out of the last loading, and had another day or so worth in there.
I should be good till 2nd week of March now. I really don't wanna load the manger out side at the porch edge again. Maybe load a 1/2 cord if needed, and hope thats all.
3 more weeks till I can process my wood, and prolly get a pole length delivery before spring. I might try and see how I feel cutting some stuff up next weekend. I can't wait another 3 weeks, the wood is calling me.

Saturday: 70* high 34* low (no fire overnight)
Sunday wake up:40*outside/63* in house so one fire to take chill off, outside warms to low 70's and sunshine...nice day. Sunday dinner at Aunt Gloria's with a pile of cousins....very nice day!

no fire untl about Wed night then back to low 30's overnight for a couple days

I do the snow removal by shovel only! It gives me plenty of exercise and gets me out of the house during the winter months. But if it snows a lot sometimes my father in law comes over and plows. My next door neighbor also came over a couple times last year and plowed our driveway-nice guy huh? This year's snow removal has been unusually light, though. 2+ feet doesn't sound so good after a couple of nice sunny days. ESPECIALLY, after hearing about Gator's beautiful weekend!

I guess we are due for some snow considering how little we've seen this year. Maybe we'll end up with another April fool's blizzard again this year! Although, I hope not. Around my April 4th birthday, the only snow I like to see is the kind that's still melting on the side of the roads and shaded areas.

Today was a nice day, went to see Avatar in 3D and out to dinner with the family. Nice end to an uneventful February vacation for the boys!

Andrew, sounds like you need a stove on your main floor. ;-P Our main stove is in the basement also, but it only sits 10' away from the stairwell. The warm air rises quickly upstairs. Even so, I still wish I had a more adequate stove in my living room to give us the option to fire up a nice blaze here. Maybe a Jotul F100. I really like that little thing!
