How would you best place fans for this tricky woodstove placement to move heat upstairs?

If you stir up the air too much it will mix together and not form a convective loop.

My stairwell is closed and bare minimum sized. The fan made it not work as well as leaving alone.

Something like this set on low might be a good place to start: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001R1Q0OG/?tag=hearthamazon-20

You wouldn't want to mount it on the ceiling to blow cold air down since that's where the hot air will need to come up from. It needs to go on the floor blowing air down. You may need two of them to help the air get around the corner. If you have box fans maybe tape some paper to the back to reduce their power and play with that first.

With your stairs it might not be possible to get a good convective loop going but I'd at least try before resorting to rebuilding the stairs.

Yes it will not always work every house is different. But i have found that it really does help in many cases.

I put it on the floor of the small landing at the top of the stairs. I didnt try putting it at the bottom. Didnt think of that. I wasnt trying to heat my whole house with the gas fireplace so much as trying to share some of the heat. Even on low the DV gas fireplace will eventually make the gameroom too hot to sit in unless I do something with the excess heat. Wife complains it's way too hot down there. I have cold air returns in basement and run the furnace blower and it helps. Stairs are on end of house so that doesnt help for sure. Center stairs are best probably.

With out cutting holes is going to be tough. I cut a 6x12 hole in the floor and added a ducted fan in a 8" duct blowing cold air form my main floor to the basement and it evened out the temps very nicely. Only took about and hour to install. Would do it again.

It is trial and error what works in one house may not in the next. There are way to many variables to consider
