How many Jelly Beans,....I mean cords ? W/ pics

Split some oak for next season last week, and thought I would get the forum to hazard a guess or two on how much is in the pile. Might be fun to see how close your guess is to the final result. I am stacking now in full cords, the lengths of the splits are 24", so 2 rows 4' high x 8' long. I have a couple more log truck loads coming, so I need to get my "processing area" cleaned up. I will post the result of the yield when the stacks are finished.

But seriously, you folks are real good with the guess!. But I already knew that. It is all done, finished this morning. I will post the answer this evening. Let folks have the time to hazard a few more guesses, and I have to get some real accurate measurements, since I see a couple of swags that contain 2 decimal places! :lol:

This wood is from a log truckload I got last summer for $550. I wanted to get an accurate count of what a truckload would yield, so I knew the next time if I was getting a good deal. Overall, I think it worked out great. Much easier that cutting trees down myself. The logs were uniform, which made the cutting and splitting very easy. I have a mingo marker, and it also worked great for marking my 24" cuts on the logs. I'm pretty sure my time spent to cut a log truck load would far exceed the $550 for the load.

I'm guessing three or four, too. (3 or 4 x 128cu ft)

But I haven't stacked wood in a pile like that for a long time and it was just a cord at the time at the end of the driveway.

Pile looks about 7' high by 18' across. Using a formula that I use to estimate firewood piles with, I came up with just about 600 cu.ft. tossed in a pile. Using 180 cu.ft. tossed = 1 full cord stacked, I come up with 3.33 cord. Let's call it 3 1/2 cord.

O.K. The time has come to bring an end to all the suspense and excitement, and announce how many cords. So......gorsuchmill...... COME ON DOWN, you are the winner of the "Cord guess is right". I came up with 4.625 cords. gorsuchmill guessed 4.51, and zapny was a close second with 4.5. The "0.625" part of the wood is 1/2 a full cord 2'x4'x8', plus 2'x1'x8'(See the pic).

So, my yield for my log truck load was 7 full cords, split and stacked. I had already done some ash that made up the balance a couple of weeks ago. So that was ~$79/cord for ash and oak. Not bad, and I was able to eliminate the harvest portion of the work. It was a reasonable trade of time and effort for $$s.

I wish I had your formula before I stacked the wood. I didn't make any measurements, but I will next time. The pic was a little deceiving.
