I love mine too. .
I have to agree that a used englander 30 or 13 would be better for a beginner. They are (almost) fool proof. I never tried my 30 with green wood but im sure it would manage although with a much reduced output. As much as i like my harman, without this website i might still be trying to figure it out.

looking to heat the barn on my days off when I go out there to work on my tractor or my cars. I didn't want to deal with a stinking, nasty, expensive to operate torpedo heater. I hate kero heat. im not looking to live out there or even work out there every day. I probably go out there for 2-3 hours a few days a week. I see that home depot has better prices on Englander then lowes does by a couple hundred bucks. lowes price on the 13-NCH was $829 home depot $649 surprised at the price difference. at $649 if it lasts 20 years or more that's a good deal I think.

so this stove isnt going to be able to heat a 4-500 sq foot space, jeeze that's a small space, its it completely worthless?
You could heat the space but like i said you would be baby sitting the stove a lot. I have my Country hearth in a 600 Sq ft apartment. Does a great job but its not enough for a very large area with its 2 CU ft firebox. BY the same token englander 30 would be too big for that space. An NC-13 englander would be just the ticket, or something like the CH2000 which i just saw for $549 at TSC.

If you could get that 13 for $629 i dont see how you could go wrong. THat stove will last a lifetime and even if you outgrow it you could always get most of your money back as it has a good reputation.

If this is for a barn I see no reason for an EPA stove, an old fisher or timberline stove will be 100 times better than that boxwood stove... i get the shivers whenever I see someone running one of those things. You want something that will heat up quick and throw the heat, look for a solid steel stove.

That's got an 8" flue, I'd think that the op's current stove uses a 6".

If decide to go with the Englander and you go to HD and you have a Lowes card (and an HD card), see if they'll match the 5% off that Lowes offers if you use their card. The Amherst HD here won't match it anymore but they can be real jerks-they always made us show our Lowes card to prove we had one-like we were going to use it there. We've never had a problem with the Lockport store.

ad356,

I have a US Stove Model 27 box stove, ca. 1960's. And if yours is like mine, its a cheapo stove. I use it in my basement when I'm working down there just to keep the chill off. It never gets below 52 in my basement anyway. I do need to load it alot, I feed it my shop wood scraps collected over the year.

You should be able to get 10% off anything you buy from HD-online, and quite often in-store, too. HD will match Lowe's 10% off coupons, which are widely available on ebay for online HD purchases -- I just ordered from HD-online via a customer service rep and she didn't even ask for the coupon code, just gave me the 10%!

one thing i dont understand is that this stove is rated for 54,000 btu's but only up to 800 sq foot. an englader 60,000 btu stove is rated for 1,800 sq foot. why is that? is it the blowers that make all of the difference?

More to do with mass I think and effecentcy .

Right, the BTU, sq ft, output given by stove mfrs is not standardized between them so you really can't compare one stove to another (other than within a mfrs own line) using those figures. Most of the mfrs BTU output figures are only a best case situation at the peak of the burn, which can't be used to understand what you'll achieve over the entire burn, hour after hour. BK is an exception which does give high and low BTU stats, which should be pretty constant over the burn depending on the high and low air/thermostat settings.

Best way I know to compare output between brands for stoves is by looking at firebox size. Determine the btu output of a full load, factor in efficiency and divide by the number of hours for a burn to get avg BTU/hour.

if this stove doesnt pan out for me here are some options i might consider

i kinda like the idea of the $599 model the price is probably right. are these good products that will last a good 20+ years or is US stove company a company to avoid entirely. does that $599 stove compare well to the $649 englander because they are about the same price

I can't personally say either way. I can say that there's an Englander rep around the forums somewhere (or was anyway, I've not been on here in a bit so I can't say for certain) AND that I very rarely see anyone having a problem with one of their stoves here.

I like my country hearth 2000 but if you can get an englander 13 for $689 id pay the extra $100 for a quality american made stove.

Thank me later. This might need a new CAT, but looks like it's in good shape. It is a Woodstock Fireview (lots of fans on this site). He just dropped the price on the stove. Of course, you need to inspect it, but I can tell you at that price you aren't going to find anything nearly as pretty.

I was just checking out the Englander site, I'm liking that nv-17 (kinda reminds me of the Chinook but in a tube version and a lot less expensive). And HD has them for like $550 ish bucks too. Not bad...probably still too much for our little "bunkie" (like 200 sq ft) but their clearances are getting better...hmmm...

Damn, that's a good deal. Should keep resale value too in case you ever want to change to a different stove.

Not that far from us!
Wish I knew someone around here looking for one!
