im looking to install my jotul oslo and the installer said the mantel might need to be higher. what is the distance from the base to the bottom of the fireplace mantel? my installer was not sure and the jotul manual was confusing. thanks!!!

Are you venting the stove through a masonry fireplace? The only mantel clearances listed are for horizontal pipe runs which would normally only come into play when installed into a masonry fireplace.

This is what its saying,

On the sides, measuring from the stove, 1" or less thick trim can be 12"
Top, from stove, 1" or less trim, 16" clearance.
Top, from stove, mantle no deeper than 12", must be 30" clearance.

From the bottom does not matter. The clearance from the stove (the stove top would be the closest part of the stove) to a mantel with a maximum mantel depth of 12" has to be 30".
