We sometimes get large hornet queens sleeping the winter off inbetween splits. They are pretty groggy and usually I shake them off, but every once in a while I have to catch one loose in the house and escort it outdoors.

All oak and hickory stacked 30 feet from the house. I bring in one days worth of wood at a time.

Feeling the Heat
All wood is stacked at least 100 feet from house. When burning season starts, I move a small wood rack to the porch and keep it stocked for ease of loading. I never store wood in the house.
I started spraying my stacks with the ortho whole house home defense, especially the 2+ cords to be burned I keep right outside the basement door. Kills about every insect trying to make a home in the wood and only costs $10 a gallon. Most of my stacks are at least 30'+ away from any building.
About 150 feet. I also keep my splitter next to the wood shed and also my supply of rounds. Do all my splitting and cutting out back. Logs are a little farther. In the winter I move it as I need it to my log hoop near the house. Not much of a problem with bugs but I do have to set traps for rodents but then I also live across the street from a dairy farm.
Mine is probably somewhere around 100' or so from the house. Reason is that's where the old carport is that I use as a woodshed. Simple cast iron poles with timber joists and corrugated roof. Still standing after nearly 50 years and pretty darn solid.
My foundation is cinder block and goes up several feet above ground, but the termite thing is real since my entire home inside and out besides the foundation is t&g cedar. Have seen several pine beetles run out while splitting wood and found a few (dead) scorpions in the basement. Other than that it's the usual moths and other insects that come out at night and are attracted to the light.
Had an exterminator spray the entire house and the outside perimeter with something that's only toxic to invertebrates. Also spread Ortho Home Defense around the outside perimeter and inside perimeter in the basement.

I keep just over a 1/3 cord under my synthetic deck about 8-10’ from my basement knee wall close to my walkout basement door. I use this for emergency wood during storms so I don’t need to go to my various main stacks spread out on my property. Don’t notice lots of bugs but did have a snake skin once when getting some wood. I do have my foundation sprayed every spring as a preventative for ants etc.
Ill take snake skins over mouse nests every day.
I keep the wood about 150' from the house, out behind the barn. In winter I move an IBC tote full at a time to a spot behind the garage that's not too far from the kitchen door. The amount of reasonably flat land here is limited.
