How do you store your pellets?

Just this morning at work, I came up with an idea for storing more pellets.
As mentioned in an earlier post, I have no room anywhere, except possibly in the cellar, but it would be too much of a hassle to get it down there.
Just thought this morning, I have a cellar window just a few feet from the driveway, if I build a slide, or find an old slide from a swingset to hook up on the window when needed, I can just take them over to the window, slide them down and then stack them.
I could get a a couple tons down there, maybe more.

Im thinking about getting one of those temporary sheds like at tractor supply they are silver.
I could put a couple of ton in there on pallets with a tarp under them.

Then in the spring I could take it down.

Has anybody had them stolen yet?

For those of us "out there" in the country without benefit of other watchful eyes ....in hard times stuff can walk away.
I now lock my outside fuel tanks and keep my valuables under lock and key..
I also deploy a Bushnell trophy cam on the driveway.Great to see raccoons..deer and the occasional bear..along with cars and trucks that come into the yard.

1 ton of corn..
1 ton of pellets next..all under lock..

I understand that bear traps with auxiliary teeth work 24/7/365+.

That's why I didn't want to store mine in the basement, but I might be, I'll see how my idea goes with the slide.

That’s what I did. Built it from rough sawn lumber, long enough to stick out the window a couple feet, bottom end (inside) sits on a table, elininates a lot of the bending on both ends, and keeps the angle shallow enough so that the bags don’t fetch up on the side of the house. Covered it with a cheap blue plastic tarp so it’s slickery. Put in 5 ton in about an hour this year.

1 Ton of Lignetics in the boiler room next to the PB150 and 4 tons in the driveway right next to the walkout basement door. I keep a convertable hand-truck in the basement so I can move about 10 bags in one shot from the driveway to the boiler room. Pellets outside are covered with plastic and then shrink wrapped. When the weather gets real cold I end up having to move pellets inside once a month (not too bad).

I stored last years 4+ tons in the basement last year... wife had a cow.... there's still 50 bags in a stairway closet..... this years 4 tons are stored outside beside the house. On pallets, with additional tarping over em.. They'll be fine...but it will suck dragging them in when its -50 C.

Hello, I am a new member and I don't have my stove just yet. Still doing my homework. I will probably but the Harmon XXV. A very reputable dealer told me he stores his pellets at home, outside and just covers them with a tarp and he has no problems. I am surprised to see almost no one in this thread stores their pellets outside. Storage is a problem for me, so outside is a good option. Can I believe this info or am I asking for trouble. Thanks for any replies.

Welcome to the forum Steven,

If you can keep the pellets dry and off of the ground and free from any chance of experiencing condensation under those covers you should be fine storing outside.

Opened pellet pallets outside are a problem.

blueshawk thats great idea i went to my local scrap yard and picked up (not sure on the real name)
one of those frames with all the rollers on it that they use on a convayer. it works pretty good but i
ripped a few bags. ill have to start lookin for a slide and give that a try

I have 4 tons in the basement now and 2 more under the overhang outside ready to come in. To get em down the hatchway stairs, I use half of an old hot tub cover as a slide and it cushions em so they slide down to a soft landing. A few split open but not too many. It saves these old knees from going up and down the steps for 6 tons worth. I've had problems leaving them outside in the past because the mice chew holes in the bottom bags and nest there.

We have purpose designed 3 foot wide slot between the basement wall and a storage room.

The bags can be stacked up to nine feet high and about 15-18 bags deep.

I think we can get 4 tons in the "slot"

The nut shells we burn are stored in the basement too. These are kept in 50 gallon food grade steel barrels with clamp on lids.

Also use cardboard barrels with clamp on lids.

I do store some shells in the barn in barrels too.

Just cant let them get wet or let the rodents get to them.


We set things up when we built the new house to work well with the pellet burners.

Got 3 ton still on the original pallets and wrapped, in the side yard. If someone wants to steal them they will have to do it a bag at a time as the motorhome is parked 2 feet away from the side gate, and there's only enough room between the MH and the fence beside it for one person to walk. They'd have to get a chain gang going to get them moved very fast.

My garage is detached and a good 60 ft from the house, with race car, tools and other equipment (plus tramping through snow and bad weather) this is not an option.
I am going today to buy my 1st ton of pellets; Lignetics. I have room on our front porch to keep at least 1 ton. I was going to store them on the pallet and under tarp; keeping approximate 10 bags in the house. Does this sound like an ok idea or do I have to worry about moisture and mildew getting into the bags?

3.6 tons on pallets in my warm and dry cellar, no running out in the cold to get bags. My cellar is insulated and I have a dehumidifier running down there, that and the hot water boiler are keeping it about 60-65 down there.

Oh yeah cellar/ basement is not an option either. Slate foundation and dirt floor already cause moisture problems. Plus with the rickety pine stairs sometimes it think twice carrying stuff up and down them. LOL

I have two tons scattered throught the house. If you want a shed just start stacking 2 or 3 tons of bags throughout your house and your wife will probably go out and buy you a prefab shed......right away.

Thanks Sam! Just wanted to make sure I was ok with a covered porch. I know ppl leave cords of wood outside all the time. But a big difference between split logs and bags of pellets with the way they burn.
