I also think people's installs leave much to be desired. There is no reason why a stove that is rated 78,000BTU, 92,000BTU, or more wouldn't get hot. Especially compared to the Vigilant. I don't buy it.
I think the reason some people might favor the vigilant is because it isn't 1/4" plate steel. It's a fairly handsome cast iron stove. It's also a top loader. Sure, it's on the small side, but not everyone wants a 78k BTU monster. Personally, a stove that big would be significant overkill for our small raised ranch.
It's also got MUCH better clearences to combustibles than that of the Harman stoves. All the harman coal stoves are 24" to combustible walls, with no rear heat shield offered. With heat shields, the vigilant will let you go as close as 13 inches to an unprotected surface. That's a big difference, especially in an install like mine, where we have a support column in front of the stove.
My stove has a heat shield and 16" rear clearance... I know your point however. If I had say a large recroom in a basement, it would be an attractive contender. A larger stove would be too much. I was just reffering to the statement that "someones" Harman didn't burn hot enough. I would like to see an Intrepid in action however. What would be nice.... a club....everyone house hops in a local area and has a couple beers in front of that person's stove. That would be wonderful (as long as no one falls onto the hot stove). I am having a Lion's Head while typing in front of mine right now!
