Helping a buddy choose an insert

Every masonry fireplace I have seen is different because they are hand built. Some the dampers are pretty easy to reach and some not so much. In my fireplace the throat was cast iron and kind of far up so it was easier to mount the plate lower and screw into the mortar joints with tap cons.

Ok so he bought the hampton hi300. $3200 with 25' liner. Of course the guy said you dont need to insulate the liner and the block off plate is not needed, these stoves are so efficient! Well do both! How is this stove? He will only be heating the dwn stairs as it will be pretty hard getting to his bedrooms upstairs.

As far as the liner goes, will we have any problem getting a 6" insulated liner down the 11x11" id flue? Will the liner bend alittle if the chimney is not a direct straight shot? I told him to cancel the liner too cause he only needs 20' and we can get it insulated for $125 cheaper then the non insulated one the dealer sells!

There should be no problem fitting the liner down that flue. You may have to cut some of the damper away to fit the liner through.

Ok thanks. Ill prolly have to cut one side more since its a little offset i guess. I keep stressing to him well do a better install! Why do these dealers wanna cut all these corners like telling him he doesnt need insulation wrapped pipe, or the block off plate is not needed!
Do it once!

11" x 11" will be a pc of cake. Either buy a couple foot extra, making a cone out of the end to pull it down, or buy a pulling cone.
That puppy should slide right down. If it gets hung up on a mortar joint, just spin the whole liner and it will drop down.
Plenty of room for insulation even, so yes, insulate the liner.
I believe the HI300 is the hearth heater, sticks out a good bit, good for cooking, and getting heat out into the room.
He may find that a good amount of heat rises to upstairs, but the bedroom doors will have to be left open to let heat in.

Because the installer wants to get it in and on to the next one. The extras make them no money and take up their time.
Time is money, but not so much with block off plates and insulation. They want the easiest/fastest install they can perform.

Thanks again! He's only a few blocks away from me so i told him get the liner and well install that 1st , the stove is a few weeks out for the dealer anyway!
Will the liner make the offset bend and not need any ridged 30* or what not bends to get it through the flu and to the stove top? Reason i ask is my other buddy needed one to get it down his 12x8 chimney, he said u cant bend this stuff like you think! Ive never had my hands on a liner!

It does not bend very much. The word flex is a little misleading. It will bend a little but no, not like your thinking.
Why not just cut out more of the damper throat to get a more straight shot?
That is what I did. And it did flex enough to connect to the insert.

Well the stove sat in the garage for a good 9 months! He finally picked up the liner and stuff needed. Pretty easy install, i was happy with it. 2 layers of roxel above and one along the back.

Anyone know what the max temp should be for this hampton HI300? Nothing in manuel on that. Dont wanna see him over fire it! Hes kinda new to it so ill coach him along.
