I am purchasing a new Hearthstone Heritage to replace my current steel stove. My reasons for replacing my current stove are 1) I want to use less wood because of the difficulty of finding wood to purchase and 2) I am impressed with having less particulate exiting my chimney. The wood I currently have is mostly fir, probably two and a half cords. Will I still be able to use this wood in a Hearthstone stove? If it makes any difference, my stove pipe comes out of the top of the stove, there is a 90° angle into the chimney, then another 90° to the top of the 18' chimney with a 8"x12" flue. I have ordered single wall pipe but wonder if I should change that to double wall? I am hoping that after starting a fire with fir, I can then build up the Kohl's with Arbutus or maple.

There's no problem burning fir, but venting into the 8x12 clay tile flue may be an issue if it dilutes the draft too much. The two 90º turns in the flue path will slow down the flow. If the flue gases then head up a large cold chimney, it could be a recipe for creosote buildup. An insulated stainless liner in the chimney is recommended and in some cases required due to fire code. Not sure about in BC.

How long is the run of stove pipe? If more than a few feet I would go double wall, especially if it's dumping into an unlined/uninsulated chimney.
