This Harmon install was done in my in ground basement by the seller but has always had a smoke or burning smell to it. The room does not get smokey or any ash material. Please review the photos and see if it looks ok to you or make suggestions. Any help would be appreciated. I clean it weekly and also the remove the ash cap at the bottom of the pipe. For scale the exit pipe is about 4-5 feet

What brand of pellet vent is that behind the stove? Looks real twisty not solid elbows or connections. Looks like duravent outside.

Not smoke problem but you really should have protection under the stove. Per Harmon see page 10 installation manual. From picture I think that is a Accentra, attached operator and installation manuals.

Much like ARC, I’m not a fan of the pipe set up off the tailpipe to the thimble…there’s potentially and probably build up of ash due to the angle and I’ve never seen that much foil tape used…I think that’s your problem…all that extra tape was an attempt at sealing up a shady pipe run.

Like others said, that is a huge amount of foil tape used on the exhaust. Although foil tape can take care of a small leake at the joints, there are two issues with that type of tape that I have:
  1. Unless the tape is laid perfectly smoothly, smoke can escape thru any creases (I am too much of a spaz to get it right)
  2. Foil tape can become more stiff and brittle over time, so leaks can develop even though it was fine before.
I would remove all the tape, check all the connections and once satisfied they are good, use hi temp silicone tape around the jo9ints (I also never met an elbow that doesn't leak). While there, make sure that elbow at the thimble doesn't have the connection to the next pipe inside the wall. If it connects inside that wall, then that needs to be fixed (the same goes for the connection on the outside part).

I never noticed that until Zrock pointed it out, thought it might be a smaller metal hearth…that would explain some smoke smell for sure

Sorry to be so long with this reply. It does have a floor protector installed so I don’t think that’s a safety issue…my pictures just didn’t show it very well.
As to the foil tape…I was always suspicious of that part of the install when they did it. The black box all that attaches to is what they called some kind of an air circulation kit…never knew or understood much about the installation…it was all new to me.

Thanks for all the help. The smoke smell seems to disappear after the initial winter burn…

Thanks to all
