Had a good scare lastnight

I put a piece of wood in the stove last night. It was gray in color and looked like the end of a well seasoned log. It immediately began flaming, oozing thick fluid and turning the glass solid black. It looked like creosote burning. I realized it must be the end of a telephone pole or something. I ran outside and grabbed my bucket. I picked up the flaming piece of wood and threw it in the bucket and slammed the lid. The house was full of nasty smelling smoke.
I dont know how it got in my woodpile but it looked just like any other piece of seasoned wood.

Just as well you noticed it there and then, imagine the mess it would have made if you had just put it on and gone off, got distracted .............

Just cleaning the glass is irritating enough without the stink in the house

LOL My father once had a lapse of common sense and tried cutting up railroad ties for firewood to burn in the cookstove. My mother set him straight after trying it but not before he ruined a few chains and a bar trying to buck it up. He eventually resorted to using the buzzsaw which I also had the task of keeping sharp.

Good friend from highschool flys helicopters for Uncle Sam. Flying through Texas and land for a rest at a remote air port. They go into the little cafe on the grounds and sit down. He says gosh that is a funny smell, his buddy says yeah it is. Then the guy running the place says I'll be right back. Goes out into the back yard area and they hear a chainsaw fire up. The guy comes back in with half a railroad tie on his shoulder and throws it in the oversize fireplace, within a few minutes there is a roaring fire and a little more of that funny smell. They looked at each other and said that would explain it! The guy running the place smiles and said that should keep ya warm. What you want to eat?

I found a piece of oak 2 yrs ago. It didn't look bad. I put it in the stove and short time later the house started messing real bad.
I threw it outside. That was the only bad experience I've had.

I hear dried elephant dung has alot of BTUs. I still wouldn't build a campfire with it
