I think the larger hazard is IT breaches/hacking of our connected infrastructure, including our grid. Although I have no insight as to what is being implemented to avoid issues.

It won't be good if all remotely controlled power sources and or power drains get turned on at the same time by bad actors.

ebs-p---What do you mean by a "automation and self healing grid infrastructure could prevent some permanent damage"...clancey
Now local switches are computer controlled. So if a tree falls and takes out a line the computer knows roughly the location and can keep as many people with power as possible. Maybe it was just a branch that touched the wires. The switch opened and the branch fell off. The self healing switches will automatically try to restore power after a certain amount of time. If the the fault is still there they will try once more before they just stay open. Before it would take men in trucks to reset switches.

This quick automation can help reduce cascading faults. Increasing up time and reducing the time it takes to reset or fix issues.

Any history of successful hacks? I’m not aware of any large disruptions.

True.
Problem is with something so integral to the functioning of society, Internet based connectivity has its drawbacks.

Waiting to recognize potential hazards until excrement has hit the air moving device is a poor approach to this ...

Nothing to do with electric greening though, as the same would be the case for e.g. drinking water

Thanks a good and easy explanation . Talking about greening of the grid cannot the science people work on maybe trying to use the hot geysers for energy? They must have a tremendous amount of storage as well. Just inquiring and do not want to throw "you all" off your topic. I find it very interesting all this posting...clancey

They could. Couple projects demonstrating proof of concept. Problem is the most thermally active areas aren’t near big populations.
