Around my neck of the woods , we deal in face cords. I have never hear of anybody who sells wood by the full cord around here. TG27 where are you located? If you paid more than $275, they would be dealing in a full cord , a face cord is generally about $80-$90.

Hi there!

First off, I'm sorry for posting this...I'm sure you get a lot of newbies like me asking this very question. BUT...I was struggling to find answers elsewhere.

Hey, we were all newbies once, except for @begreen!

This is exactly the place to ask your questions.

Welcome aboard!

I was wondering if it was a face cord! Invoice says that's it's a cord, but maybe it's assumed it's a face cord. I paid 180 in NJ.

I googled firewood in NJ and the average price for face cord is about $180, by my calculations you have 1.5 face cord . Seems ,you made out OK, use this as a learning lesson.

Just out of curiosity, what is your approach for keeping people honest? It's hard to tell how much you've got when it's dumped in the driveway.

A true cord stacked tight measure 128 cubic feet..
A cord loose, or thrown in measures more like 190 cubic feet..
A tape measure and a little math will tell you what you’re getting..

Best bet would be to pick it up yourself from a seller that has it stacked, so you see it and measure it

I once counted each piece when I threw it into my trailer. Here is what I came up with ,246 pieces per face cord= 654 per full cord . I think I had too much time on my hands that day

TG: No woodsman worth a crap is going to be selling split wood in lengths that vary from 12" - 18". There's no way you can square foot that to see what you paid for!

I would move on from that guy and tell anyone who will listen to stay away buying his wood.

Mathwise if a facecord = 1/3 cord then 246 x 3 = 600 + 120 + 18 = 738 pieces of firewood in a cord. You are shorting yourself!

At pieces cut 18” =2.666666 face cord x246= 656 pieces per full cord

I am open & honest with them, and keep it that way :)

I've had 2 firewood guys. #1 (now retired) , I got to the point where he would bring me 4 - 5 8' F250 mounded loads of newly split hardwoods for $100. He thought I was nuts buying a year ahead (I'm usually 2 years ahead, ready to go ), and letting it sit for 2 years ;)

#2, whom I adore, charges the same for the same. Does not think I'm nuts for being ahead. Saves cherry for me ( ). Has fixed my splitter no charge !!!!! He has also brought me a truck load firewood after 2' of snow because I couldn't get to the stacks (problem since seriously rectified ! ), and was in a semi panic. Seasoned & ready to burn for $140 :)

Alivegas99 has a great point a full cord is 4x4x8 feet , down here it's very common for Craigslist sellers to show up with a pickup truck bed of wood which is not even close to 1/2 cord if just thrown in a pile

You got that right. You all too often get the double whammy around here (less than the cord you ordered and unseasoned to boot).
