Has anyone used these, as oposed to the gel, and what do you think? I bought a box today and sems a lot cheaper then the gel. Any advice, much appreciated. Doug

I use the Rutland fire starter squares, $11.00 for 144 of them.

I make my own. I can start 3" to 4" wood with no kindling. The ones I make burn for 45 minutes.

I have been using square starters made by Landmann USA. I was looking for gel , but these were all I found on that trip to HD.

They work well for starting the fire, although they stink a bit at first. I can let them burn with a few pellets on top and below the square for about 30 seconds and then close the door. After another minute or so, I start the blower.

I think the plastic wrapper definitely contributes to the clinker, though.

A co-worker uses cedar shavings to get his going. I will try that next.

Super cedars are far the best .

I cut up old dura flame fire logs. Just slice them with a kitchen knife into about 4x4x1 inch pieces.

I've been using the firestarters from Walmart. On comparing the prices, they are the same as the Super Cedars in the 100 pack. If I remember right, they worked quite well with the samples that were given out a few years ago.
