Hey All
Just picked up a used newer wood stove really nice compared to what we had.The problem is with the old one the damper was broken it had to be wired open all the time. Man I really went through some wood and no long burn time. Can someone tell me the proper way to get a long slow burn with the new one when I swap it . Thanx...

Unfortunately wrenchmonster there are no numbers or name on the unit. But its a pretty one. I'm trying to get pics on bout computer not working well Sorry. It is A wood stove. I do know some of the better woods I have lots of locust and ash. Just don't know how to operate the damper and air holes together. Always running wide open damper with the old dragon.

If it helps, you can PM me and send the pictures to me. I'll post them for you.

Im trying to get some pictures up for u guys ill get back with u thanks all

I finally was able to get a pic loaded up of the stove in question

sir I have to ask. who would buy an unlisted stove, without the slightest clue in what they are buying?
with out a listing or any kind of identification, no building inspector would ever issue a premit to install it

In the past I remember seeing a stove like that made by Scandia

hopefully some can identify that stove then we can try to find if it was listed

Rut Roh. Not only does the stove appear to be unlisted, but that install looks unsafe to me. Combustibles way too close for that stove. The floor (which looks like vinyl, or even if it is wood) does certainly not look safe. Also, if the floor is in 12x12 squares, that would mean the stove looks to be about 8" to the rear wall.

I would find out if the stove is listed, and if it's not, then attempt to return the stove and get my money back. Regardless, I would definately install whatever stove you choose SAFELY.

Bucko64, please understand we are not trying to be jerks here, just concerned about the legality and the safety of you and your family.

Guys the stove is not installed yet it is sitting there till I get some pipe. It is ten times better shape then the one im using now. Funds a little low couldn't get new this one will do for now its in very good shape..

looks nice, good luck with your install, and dont' forget about proper clearances etc.

Bucko64, thank goodness that was not the install... you had me worried there for a minute.

Could you post a picture of your current stove and set up?

-Kevin

Thank's berlin I am pretty sure it will do much better. wrench. I should of told u guys that it wasn't hooked up. I will try to get a oic of the old one it's in bad shape damper wired open, door hinge broke,no gasket's.Are u suposed to shut the damper some to slow the burn down or the air vent's or both?

shut them both down, when burning really slow controll draft with stove air controll and when burning hot controll draft with damper in the stack. if you do a lot of slow burns, make sure that you burn a HOT fire at least every couple of days, and every morning if possible; this will help burn off creosote accumulation in the chimney before it builds up to the point where it causes a major chimney fire.

Dragon is dead swaped out the stoves today.Every thing went good so far. I will get a picture of the dragon up tommorw eve. need some light to take the pic. Thanx all for your advice. :)

I didn't know building inspectors made housecalls or inspections on Sundays?

I suspect this isn't exactly a legal install Elk... I'd be nervous about it as well, although judging from the description of the old stove, even a Vogelzang might be an improvement.... I have the feeling that this is not going to be one of our outstanding examples of safety, we may have to settle for encouraging Bucko64 to do the best he can with a bad setup.

Sometimes you just have to make the best out of a bad situation.

To that end, what is worse?

A. Well designed and made pre EPA stove that has seen better days. Maybe warped, cracked, needing gaskets, rusted or missing parts, etc.... Installed to or beyond code, with more than adequate clearance to combustibles, proper chimney, etc...

B. More modern but unlisted stove, in new or almost new condition. Installed to or beyond code, etc...

I'm really not sure of the answer.

Ok guys it took a while to get the camera to work but got them.Hear are pictures of the dead dragon and the new install.Actually i did not install the old set up and glad i didn't There was a used pice of fire back on the floor. He used the pice that had the hole cut for damper, big brown char spot on the rug... I liked to shoot..Any way this setup is ten times better Im SURE.

Bucko64, what's the clearance to the wall and the back side of the stove? Also, what's the clearance of the single wall stove up going up? Does it go into a thimble or straight up?

I think that's an old Franklin stove (your old one)???

Have you determined what is the brand/maker of the new stove?

-Kevin

Man, that's one scary old stove. Forced a friend if Fair Oaks, CA. to rip one of those out 10 years ago. Those things freak me out.

New stove looks good. Did you get the make model and vintage yet?

Wrech the stove is 15'' from each wall cemt board with ceramic spacers them fire board . Stacck is double insulated 2 foot down from cealing.Much better then what was there and how they had it. They had nothing but panneling on the left side,Hole in fire board underneath ETC.

UncleRich thanks I didn't get make or model yet I know the front is cast and the box is steel
