First day with no fire as temps went up so the heat pump can do some work. Early morning and we have a what's that noise moment. Got a bird in the stove again. My chimney is an 8" class A with a Selkirk stainless cap that has a band around it. You wouldn't think they'd get in there but it seems like every year there's either one new dumb bird or it's the same bird every year.

Sounds like a comfy chair and a BB gun to train them. Guess they are a little smarter around me. None so far.

I had the same issue about 10 years ago. I wrapped my cap with hardware cloth during the off season to keep the critters out and took it off during the burning season. After a few years I left it off and no issue since.

Had another bird in the stove yesterday. It warmed up so we let the fire burn out with intentions of cleaning the chimney today. Did the plastic bag trick and got it out. Cleaned the chimney today and wrapped the cap with 2x4 fence wire, with the caps band that closes it down to 2x 1 1/2" squares, Maybe this will deter them from going in.

Based on my prior similar issues, I think they want to build a nest. A couple of seasons and the culprits will have "aged out". Good Luck!

Curious, how long was your fire out before the bird got in there?

Let it go out the day before, still had cold ashes in the stove and the top of the cap was dirty. I do live with a lot of heavily wooded land directly behind the house and I'm very close to a river so we get every kind of bird around. I've had an eagle in the tree just behind the house.
