I have the Harman insert. PITA to get that hog moved out it's cage. I will clean the flute after 2 tons. Have a small hose for the vacuum so I can get the entire exhaust track up to the blower in the back cleaned out each time I clean the stove (which is once a week). So far so good.

We burn nut shells, which leave possibly 2-3 times the fly ash.
The large Whitfield is direct vented with right at 4 feet total run, and the little Whitfield has 2 feet of direct vent horrizontal.

I clean the pipes every two weeks with the leaf blower (suck)

Takes a couple minutes to remove the terminus cap, stick the sucker on there and give it a whizzzz.

Every situation is different, and based on the type of fuel, the stove being run and the install setup, things will be different for everyone.

Keep an eye on the flu and act accordingly would be my suggestion.

As long as the flu is clear with little more than a dusting of ash sticking to the flu walls, your good.

My large Whit will gather nearly 1/3 - 1/2 of the pipe full of ash on the horizontal run in two weeks of 24/7 running which requires the schedule I use

Good luck, stay warm and keep your flu clean.

Dang!
I realize that nut shells are different but that's a lot of accumulation in the horizontal section. The most I have seen in my horizontal section was probably 1/16" AT MOST. that's in a 4" diameter flue so plenty of free area left. Still clean it every month though just because its easy.

I only have it cleared out once a season. I want to personally do it more often. I'm guessing the only thing I'd need is the proper silicone to re-seal my exhaust pipe. Any suggestions?
